Wright secures top German performer Rocchigiani for overseas clients.
US-based agent Sam Wright landed one of the night's star lots for clients in Hong Kong, a country with which he has a strong association. He was born in Hong Kong and represented that country in showjumping before switching to thoroughbreds and heading to Arizona, where he gained a degree in Horse Racing Management.Bidding by phone, Wright gained recent Goodwood winner Rocchigiani (Lot 43) with a bid of €575,000. His purchase, a three-year-old son of National Stud sire Time Test, was trained by Germany's Peter Schiergen to win twice at two, including a Gr.3 event at Baden-Baden, and he has continued to progress this year. A close second to Maljoom in the Gr.2 Mehl-Mülhens- Rennen (German 2,000 Guineas) at Cologne was followed by a good run when fifth of 15 in Royal Ascot's Gr.3 Jersey Stakes, and he then won Goodwood's Gr.3 Thoroughbred Stakes.Wright, who founded Equine Investors International, said of Rocchigiani: "He'll head to Hong Kong later this year and be trained by 13-time champion jockey Douglas Whyte. The thing I liked most about this colt was that his form backed up - he wasn't beaten far by Maljoom in the German Guineas, and the winner went on to run a big race in the [Gr.1] St James's Palace Stakes."He carried a penalty in the Jersey Stakes and the ground was very quick, so he should handle conditions in Hong Kong. He then backed that up in a Gr.3 at Goodwood."
